Back in Orbit: John Glenn's Return to Space
Published in Hardcover by Longstreet Press (December, 1998)
Average review score:

A good book about a great American heroI was thrilled to buy this book, as it was John Glenn's flight back in 1962 that first got me interested in spaceflight history - an interest which endures to this day. I also flew all the way from Australia to attend the STS-95 launch, and consider it one of the greatest occasions of my life. This book is very well written, as it should have been with two professionals at the helm, and obviously a lot of background work was done on the text prior to the launch. It reads very well and easily, and the photo choice (although the reproduction of some is quite poor) is excellent. For such a well researched book, however, the authors should have paid a little more attention to what actually occurs in the final ten seconds of a shuttle launch, as they got that wrong and - hey guys! - the teacher who died in the Challenger explosion was Christa McAuliffe, not McCauliffe as you state on several occasions. But they are mild irritations in an otherwise worthwhile, and certainly timely, book.

Confederate Home Front: Montgomery During the Civil War
Published in Hardcover by Univ. of Alabama Press (May, 1999)
Average review score:

Select story for select audience...?Rogers offers a look at the first capital of the Confederacy -albeit the capital for a mere handful of months. Rogers then expands focus on Montgomery for the remaining war years ('61-'65). Although Rogers presents the city of Montgomery as a "microcosm" of other Southern cities, I find Rogers offers little to defend his thesis. Except for its "15 minutes" as the capital, Montgomery, for the most part, largely escapes the ravages of other towns/cities/villages of the Deep South. I really found not much of a story to tell within these pages. Indeed there is only 156 pages of readable text!

Discourse on Metaphysics and the Monadology (Great Books in Philosophy)
Published in Paperback by Prometheus Books (November, 1992)
Average review score:

Great works, bad edition. There's nothing terribly wrong with the texts themselves in this edition, but it has no explanatory notes or introduction of any kind. This is a particular problem with Leibniz's works, as while he is not a difficult thinker in the same way as Kant or Hegel, his thought runs into a seamless system, and he usually assumes that you know at least something about it in his works. His works are thus very difficult to fully understand if you don't get some kind of third party introduction into his general thought, and that is what kills this edition. I really recommend you get "Philosophical Texts, G.W. Leibniz" from the Oxford range instead of this one. It's a far superior book for both the newcomer to Leibniz, and more serious scholar.

Environmental Geology
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill Science/Engineering/Math (May, 2000)
Average review score:

Look for it in a used bookstoreThe book explains very basic environmental terms and concepts fairly well. The information is very clear and the wording concise. It does a good job of getting some general themes across. However, I would definitely not pay full price for a book such as this. Look for it in a used book store.

The Gospel of John: Peace in Storm, John 13-17
Published in Hardcover by Baker Book House (August, 1999)
Average review score:

Just okayThere are good discussions that will stimulate meditational reflection but there isn't the indept exposure that I expected. Analyse the word, give us a picture of the environment then and dig deep into the word. There is a lot of Boice opinion and a feel too much social discourse. I discovered later that the book is a collection of radio sermons, that explains it.
Do not misunderstand me, Boice's work is good, but it isn't exactly what I was looking for. It didn't cause me to raise my eyebrow cos of some academic or historical or language insight.

Help! You're Shrinking (Choose Your Own Adventure, No 7)
Published in Paperback by Bantam Books (March, 1983)
Average review score:

Short as the title impliesThe plot of the story is simple, you find an bottle near the lake and either you or your dog gets shrunk. In a shrunken state you must try to stop your shrinkng or escape home. You'll find yourself dealing with giant animals such as hornets and frogs. If your dog is shrunk you'll have to find a way to grow him back or maybe just leave him that way. It's a really short book with great illustrations. Definately a book for younger readers.

Is Jesus the Only Way? (Today's Issues (Wheaton, Ill.).)
Published in Paperback by Crossway Books (March, 2000)
Average review score:

Not badThis isn't a bad book, but there is another booklet in the Today's Issues series which I believe covers this topic better. Ryken explains on the basis of scripture why Christians should not accept the validity of other religions. He doesn't do a bad job, but I prefer the approach the Rod Rosenbladt takes in "Christ Alone." In that booklet, Rosenbladt presents a more theological answer to this question.
If you want to explain to non-Christian why you can't accept other paths to God then Ryken's book may be for you. If on the other hand you are a Christian and want to see for yourself why Jesus provides all then the Rosenbladt book is better.

Montgomery Bus Boycott and the Women Who Started It
Published in Paperback by Univ of Tennessee Pr (May, 1987)
Average review score:

Strength and WeaknessRobinson's book is truly a memoir, and I find this to be both a strength and a weakness. It gives the book strength because it is a complete personal account. Every piece of information is direct from not only a first hand observer, but moreover a participant. However it weakens the book because at points too much information was detailed. Especially information about already well documented events.

Montgomery County Ghost Stories
Published in Paperback by Exeter House Books (June, 2000)
Average review score:

Not that impressive...I read the Philadelphia Ghost Stories first and thought it was pretty interesting, being a Philly resident. So I went and bought Montgomery County also. Well, I wasn't that impressed with the book. I didn't find myself hurrying to turn the page. In fact, I know of a lot more stories that just weren't published in this book. It had a lot of holes. As an alumus of one of the colleges featured, I know of hauntings that just weren't mentioned at all.
